Title: Potjie Pots
Post by Kingsthorpe David on Sep 6th, 2012 at 6:36pm
Several references have made to South African Potjie Pots in various places in this forum over time.
After consulting with Derek a new thread has been created where Potjie Pot topics may be posted.
The aim is to make this thread a reference source for information about Potjies and Potjiekos cooking.
Pronounced - Poikie Pot.

Falkirk Potjie No 3 used at the Leeton show camp oven cook off October 13 2012.
Click on the pictures to enlarge:

This pot has an interesting history.
Bought new in South Africa 18 years ago, is preseasoned.  Bought September 2012 brand new never used by self for $70 + $15 postage,  first used at the Leeton Show Camp Oven Cook Off.
To clean it up I filled it up with warm water the day before with a dash of washup liquid and gave it a boil for an hour using Heat Beads in my Volcano stove. Then dried it over heat and sprayed all over with Olive Oil. Worked well.

Completely cast, It was more than likely used for fat rendering (Whales) or the likes, I couldn't imagine it was used for food but you never know. I've seen photo's of similar pots used during the Potato famine in Ireland. This one has a hole in the bottom and once had a plant in it. I plan on cleaning it up and painting black and putting it next to my camp oven area and possibly putting a top on it to use it as a table or bench.

http://www.potjieking.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=67:potjieking-braai&catid=38:fp-rokstories

PotjieKing is constructed of 1.2mm 409 and 304 series stainless steel. Even the braai grid and coal grid are stainless steel to offer you an all round hard wearing, durable product.

As the PotjieKing is a closed unit, raised off the ground, the fire and ash is contained and minimal heat is transferred to the ground making it safe to use everywhere!

To make life even easier PotjieKing comes with a lid clip on the side, keeping the lid off the ground. Also included is your hand tool for opening and closing the doors, lifting your Potjie Pot lid and raking the coals.

PotjieKing is incredibly fuel efficient with 1 layer of briquettes lasting upto 4 hours! The double door design is what gives you control over your cooking temperature. PotjieKing is most fuel efficient if cooking with both doors closed. Enough air enters the unit through the slots to keep it ticking over, but should you require more heat just open up the bottom door (leaving the top closed) which creates air flow to your fire thereby heating it up. Alternatively should you wish to allow some of the heat to escape you can open the top door, which acts the same as if you had opened your over door allowing the heat to escape.

The design of the PotjieKing ensures that you have no wind interferance, this means that you will have a constant cooking temperature. This has removed the hassle of battling to maintain a good cooking temperature. No more coals in and coals out!

PotjieKing works with a size 2 up to a size 6 round bottom best duty Potjie Pot, though it is ideally suited for the most popular size 3, it can also be used with most flat bottom pots.

PotjieKing includes a removable braai grid. The grid can also be used as a cooking platform for a wide variety of cooking utensils eg. A camping kettle, frying pan, WOK, small flat bottom pots etc.

Hi David,

I am glad you are such a fan of Potjies! It is a great way to cook.

We are currently busy with a large order for export to Australia through a company called AllStar Products. They will be distributing to a few chain stores in Australia. The shipment should arrive in Australia in August and should be available in stores shortly after that. If you would like I can find out which stores they will be stocked in and let you know.

However if you would like us to send one over we can do that for you. The PotjieKing costs R840 excl delivery. Airmail is R1070 and takes 3 – 10 days. Surface mail is R256 and takes between 30 – 90 days.

I look forward to hearing from you.

RE: POTJIEKING
IN REPLY TO MY QUESTION WHERE IS IT MADE

Oh yes and the PotjieKing is manufactured in South Africa by my very talented husband, Ben. We live on the Garden Route which is one of the most beautiful area’s in SA. It has its name from the astounding variety of flora found along this stretch. Very beautiful.

I hope it’s warming up for you! Its winter here as well and I must say I am not a fan of the cold!

We certainly do pay huge freight costs for everything here in Australia.  I have seen some freight costs where it would be just about cheaper to drive and pick things up yourself.

Hillbilly do try and get to a lot of shows in Australia where you can buy direct from them though.

Keep an eye on this page to see where they will be http://www.campingwithhillbilly.com/shows.php

Yeah mate I totally forgot about that as my daughter and son in-law went to the recent Brisbane caravan show and we baby sat the three granddaughters. Kicking myself now as I wanted a couple of their frying pans. They have some great gear but the freight is the killer (the freight companies sure make us pay a premium). I will have to keep an eye out when the next show is on up this way.

However if you would like us to send one over we can do that for you. The PotjieKing costs R840 excl delivery. Airmail is R1070 and takes 3 – 10 days. Surface mail is R256 and takes between 30 – 90 days.

Just checked my MasterCard statement,  the transaction was AUD213.86 including Intrnational transaction fee AUD7.03

Hi everyone,

I don't want to offend anybody or break any rules but thought we would introduce ourselves as the retailer of the Potjie King as mentioned above by Kingsthorpe David.

We are located in Warwick, Qld and freight our products Australia wide, so if we can help anybody with a Potjie King please call us on 07 4661 4788 or via our website www.downsheating.com.au  Rather keep the business in Australia if the price is competitive.

We would love to get some hints and tips to put on our website if anybody would care to share about their Potjie King experiences or tips

Hello, is this the South African Police?"
"Eish-Yes. What you want?"
"I'm calling to report my neighbour, Hendrik van der Merwe! He is hiding dagga inside his firewood."
"Eeeh-Yes... Thank you for your co-operasheen and informasheen in combating crime and violence, in our society seh"
The next day, the SAPS descends on Hendrik's house. They search the braai lapa where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they chop open every piece of wood, but find no dagga. They shout and swear at Hendrik and leave.
The phone rings at Hendrik's house.
"Hey, Hendrik! Did the SAPS come?"
"Ja!"
"Did they chop your firewood for the braai tonight?"
"Ja!?"

Assume it is some certification from the foundry in China for these unbranded pots.

You need to ask the seller.

Best Duty and Falkirk are the most commonly found Potjies.

Best Duty have pots marked MADE IN SOUTH AFRICA,  the pots without that are more recent and made in China.

If you are looking for a decent Potjie Ron,  suggest you take your time and find a Made In South Africa Best Duty or a Falkirk,  No 3 is a good size.  See photo.

I collected my potjie this morning. Theo was telling me that they purchased it prior to emigrating from SA some 15 years back. So it is not a particularly old piece but they're not made anymore as I understand.
It is a heavy little sucker for sure; is that what you were referring to Dave?
The casting isn't fine by any stretch (but why would it be I thought); surely built for serious use and handling.
I will clear up some areas with the dremmel and file, the interior and especially within the ears, so the bail can work correctly. There is some casting residue there that impedes the bail hook.
Three legs works great, doesn't it? Even with one extra long it sits stable ;) That is the other small job I will sort.
Yes Jeff, I am real happy with it.
PS Jeff, can you send images and dimensions of your 11 inch Camp oven?

From my reading I understood that 'Best Duty' bought Falkirk out and that Falkirk no longer existed. Could that be old stock?? Or maybe it is that Best Duty produce the 'new' Falkirk but they're lighter in the manner of Best duty????

I'm undecided whether I like the idea of these items from Housetech for safeguarding property :-/

From my reading I understood that 'Best Duty' bought Falkirk out and that Falkirk no longer existed. Could that be old stock?? Or maybe it is that Best Duty produce the 'new' Falkirk but they're lighter in the manner of Best duty????

[/quote]

I have been trying to work this out for a couple of years!
Any more information will be very welcome.

This new YouTube tutorial about using the Potjie King cooker just popped up in my Facebook:

http://youtu.be/QkilK1bTsdw

I really enjoy using mine with a Potjie Pot.
Can even use it  on my new timber deck out the front of my house.

South African Potjie Pots sure look interesting. Are they really special in anyway.

The rounded bottom requires less heat than a conventional flat bottom camp oven.
South Africans tend to have the fire at the side and feed coals under the Potjie as required.
Once up to simmer,  very little heat is needed.

A courier just arrived with a No 1 Platpotjie by ACTION AFRICA,  seems quite old from the tag in the pot and brand new never used,  fully seasoned and ready for use.  Also has a business card -  LINDSCO Distributor for Potjie Cast Iron Pots Davisboro GA and that looks old as well.  See:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Action-Africa-Flat-Bottom-Cast-Iron-Potjie-Pot-Size-1-3-Quarts-NWT-/161338839070?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=VXL%252BfwVmIdKi1B7bJiJuD2qdayQ%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I bought this little pot to use in my Cobb Cooker with the extension ring.

Does anybody know anything about ACTION AFRICA?
Made in South Africa perhaps?

Nice little pot for the price David.  I see the company website http://actionafrica.com is now only selling tents so maybe even a different company.

Cheers

Yes I was quite happy with the price.  I have been looking for one for three years.

This video is the reason I bought it:

Interesting to note that the cook has 14 briquettes in the Cobb fire basket,  with Heat Beads nine would would fill the basket!  Which makes one wonder about the number of coals over/under as given in US recipes for Camp Ovens!

In fact this is the same business Derek.
The owner is Paul Zway who sold the Action Africa pots.
I am talking directly to him by email and hope he can tell if my No 1 Platpotjie is made in South Africa or China and how old it is.

I have heard whispers of this before,  but apparently Falkirk in South Africa made a size 100 Potjie at one time.  Picture supplied by Paul Zway of Action Africa:

http://i914.photobucket.com/albums/ac341/KingsthorpeDavid/Falkirk2_zpsd6f55a71.jpg

Paul also said - "After Falkirk stopped producing in Scotland (by Carron Company), they produced them in Rhodesia and I believe later moved production to SA in the early 80’s".

I would say more for keeping warm at the table than cooking.

Thanks for that.  There are a lot of South African wines that I like and they have my favourite sparkling red, JC Le Roux La Chanson, which my normal supplier hasn’t stocked for a while.

South African Merlots can be exceptional.

Davids price by the way is good for a No 8 Best Duty.
